Why are new variants of COVID-19 showing up?
Viruses tend to evolve in order to infect, replicate and transmit to more individuals. There are many variants of the coronavirus that are undetected because they pose no threat while other variants are considered dangerous. If a variant continues to infect people by the numbers, they gain prominence.
Why is Omicron known as a “variant of concern”?
According to WHO, here are the three requirements for a mutation to be declared a variant of concern:
- Increase in transmissibility or detrimental change in Covid-19 epidemiology
- Increase in virulence or change in clinical disease presentation
- Decrease in the effectiveness of public health and social measures or available diagnostics, vaccines and therapeutics
Omicron has been declared a variant of concern based on the observed mutations that are considered to be dangerous.
How is Omicron diagnosed?
RT-PCR is currently the most accepted and most commonly used testing method. The test can detect specific genes to confirm the presence of the virus.
What precautions do I need to take for Omicron?
The Centre has urged people to mask themselves, maintain social distancing, take both doses of the vaccine and maintain proper ventilation at work or home.
