When is the right time to visit ENT?

A GP or a general physician helps you with your basic health queries, but when it comes to matters that require a specialist you need to know when to consult one. For instance, an ENT or ear nose and throat specialist diagnoses a problem arising from any of these organs that is hard to self-detect. However, if you are wondering whether you or your loved one requires the attention of an ENT specialist then you should know some symptoms that may be common but should not be ignored.

Symptoms not to be ignored

Following symptoms may be common but these are serious health issues if any of these persist beyond 2 weeks:

Hoarseness

• Hoarse voice persisting beyond 2 weeks is indication of serious illness.
• It may be infection in larynx or worst case scenario an onset of cancer.

Difficulty Swallowing

• Dysphagia is a condition where the patient finds it difficult to swallow.
• Even liquid would cause pain in the throat area.

Dizziness

• Dizziness or balance problems require a check with the ENT as it may be due to inner-ear imbalances.
• Frequent falls may be life-threatening hence visit to ENT is a must.

Hearing Loss

• A sudden one-sided hearing loss or hearing difficulty whether full or partial is a serious concern.
• Your ENT will help you diagnose hearing problem and the right treatment for onset of infections.

Swelling in neck

• The swelling may be painless, but it might be an indication of cancer.
• An ENT specialist will help you diagnose the right reason behind the swelling.

Breathing Difficulty and Cough

• Infection in chest or lung may lead to breathing difficult, inflammation of the nose or even tuberculosis can be rightfully detected when you check with an ENT.
• More than 3 weeks of persistent cough is a serious matter that should be immediately diagnosed by an ENT.
  Recurrent Nosebleeds
• Nosebleeds may seem normal or common, but recurrent nosebleed may be indicative of a serious problem.
  Facial Pain/Headaches
• It should not be ignored as it may indicate a neurological disorder.
• Consulting an ENT will help you understand the underlying cause as the problem may be related to these organs.
