What is a bone fracture?

In layman terms it is called breaking a bone, in medical term a crack or a bone breakage is known as a fracture that can occur in any bone within the body.

Types of fractures

  • A bone may break without damaging the surrounding tissue or without tissue tear termed as closed fracture.
  • When the surrounding skin or tissues are damaged then it is called a compound fracture or an open fracture.

What is a ligament tear?

Ligament is a connecting tissue of bones, when there is a forceful impact on the joint then ligament tear takes place.

Types of ligament tear

Ligament tear often takes place in thumb, the ankle, wrist, knee, neck, or back ligaments.

Why plaster is required?

It is used to set a fractured bone in its place and to immobilize it. It may be applied for a temporary period of time or while waiting for further treatment.

When is plaster required?

  • A definitive treatment to immobilize the affected area to bring relief to swelling and pain.
  • To use as a tool to un-displaced fractures.
  • Used for the purpose of maintaining the fragment reduction.
  • For aid in fixing fractures or even for the purpose of fixing bones due to internal surgery.

Types of Fracture Plaster available

Plaster cast

Gauze and plaster strips are used to wrap around the affected area that dries and hardens in 24-48 hours.

Synthetic cast

Fiberglass or plastic strips are secured around the area; these are often of different colors and lighter material than plaster. Takes few minutes to set and hardens within few hours.

Cast brace

Hard plastic is used for cast brace; soft padding is used to compress the injury. It is held together with removable Velcro strips.

Splint or a half cast

Made from fiberglass or plaster at times where bandage is wrapped to hold the slabs in place. Often used for bringing down the swelling.
