Why blood test is required?
Blood test is required to diagnose a number of diseases and their conditions.
Blood Test help in detecting the following:
- Evaluate how well organs are working. Eg – kidneys, liver, thyroid and heart
- Diagnose diseases and conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, anemia and other coronary diseases
- Find how much prone to risk heart is
- Checking blood clotting conditions
- Checking if body health is in good condition.
Different types of blood test
Blood Cholesterol Test: Cholesterol is a fatty substance created from liver by fatty foods in diet and help in proper functioning of body. Increased level of cholesterol increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Cholesterol levels are measured by simple blood test.
Blood Glucose (sugar) test: A number of blood test may be used to detect blood glucose level. This indicates sugar level in blood.
These include:
- Fast glucose test
- Glucose tolerance test
- HbA1C test
Blood culture test: Blood culture test is used to detect if an bacteria is present in blood. This involves taking a small sample of blood from a vein in arm and from many other parts of body. The samples are combined with nutrients encouraging growth of bacteria.
Blood Group Detection Test: Blood group test is done to detect the group in which blood falls. There are four blood groups A, B, O and AB. Each of them have their RH factor either positive or negative.
Blood group detection test is necessary especially during pregnancy or other medical conditions where blood transferring is required.
Cancer Blood Test: Cancer blood test is used to diagnose if specific type of cancer is present in body or how prone the body is to cancer. Some of the tests include PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) for detecting Prostate cancer, CA125 protein indicating ovarian cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes used to detect breast cancer in women.
Coagulation Test: Coagulation test is used to detect if blood clots normally. If blood takes longer time to coagulate it may indicate bleeding disorder like haemophilia.
Electrolyte Test: Electrolyte test is used to check levels of Sodium, Potassium and Chloride in the body. These help in maintaining water balance in the body. Lack of balance of these minerals may lead to dehydration or diabetes.
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR): ESR test is conducted by measuring time required for red blood cells to sediment. The lesser time it requires to form sediment indicates arthritis, Crohn’s disease, etc
FBC (Full Blood Test): This is a test to check the types and number of blood cells in blood, including RBC, WBC and platelets. FBC is used for detecting anemia or Vitamin B12 deficiency.
Thyroid Function Test: This test is used to test blood for levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and, where needed, thyroxine and triiodothyronine (thyroid hormones). Low TSH implies underactive thyroid, high TSH implies overactive thyroid.
